BloodRayne: Betrayal new screens are (mostly) blood-free

What's black and red and green all over? The latest batch of BloodRayne: Betrayal screens! With the exception of one blood explosion, the screens are surprisingly nonviolent. Then again, we suppose all that green stuff could be soylent green.

Steam Improves its Content Delivery System

Steam

If you've ever struggled to download a new game on launch day from Steam, you'll be pleased to hear that Valve has upgraded its content delivery system. This should make it easier and quicker to download new titles that are in high demand, improve download speeds worldwide, and allow for more games to be shipped through Steam.

For those who are stuck with an ISP that has a monthly bandwidth cap (you poor thing), Steam will no longer force you to download unnecessary amounts of data when a game is updated. Instead, you'll simply download whatever has been changed, rather than the entirety of the files that have been updated. Updates can now also make their way onto Steam more quickly in the first place, thanks to a simpler process for developers.

Valve's announcement revealed some upcoming features Steam will be getting through client updates, including download scheduling, bandwidth throttling, and the ability to both prioritize the order that games are downloaded in and download updates for a game while playing it (the update won't be applied until after you're done playing).

Retailer sites show new August date for El Shaddai

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is officially scheduled for release July 26, 2011, but it seems Amazon and GameStop have their own schedule, both listing its release as August 16, 2011. Considering El Shaddai has been in development since 2007 and has been delayed once already, perhaps the retailers are just assuming here.

We have contacted Ignition for confirmation of El Shaddai's release, or even just a date for when it will release information about a new release date, if that's Metatron enough for you.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Week in gaming: EVE mon0cles, board games, Sony HDMI

This week we reviewed Sanctum, a game that mixes first-person shooting with tower defense. We looked a new board game called Chaostle, and enjoyed that as well. We also followed the story of Sony's restriction of high-definition support over component cables in future PlayStation 3s, which the company clarified would only impact Blu-ray movie viewing.

We talked about the virtual riots in EVE—a reaction to microtransactions selling vanity items—and looked at how CCP calmed the situation. It was a fun week, so take a look at the stories you may have missed.

Appeals court rejects constitutional challenge over full-body scanners

A federal appeals court on Friday unanimously declined to block the government from using  intrusive body scanners across airports nationwide, saying it is “not persuaded by any of the statutory or constitutional arguments” against them.

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit was deciding a constitutional and procedural challenge to the Advanced Imaging Technology “nude” body scanners, which began rolling out in 2007 and are deployed to at least 78 airports nationwide. The Electronic Privacy Information Center asked the court to block usage of the devices—of which 500 more are to be rolled out this year—on grounds that they are an unconstitutional privacy invasion, ineffective, and unhealthy to airline passengers.

French copyright cops: we're swamped with "three strikes" complaints

Hadopi, the French agency charged with implementing France's stringent "three strikes" copyright enforcement program, has released new statistics that shed light on the logistical challenges of getting a nation of 65 million people to stop sharing infringing content online.

The volume of alleged infringement is even higher than earlier reports suggested. More than 18 million complaints have been submitted so far, and Hadopi hasn't been able to keep up. So far, only 470,000 initial warning e-mails have been sent to French Internet users. Only a small fraction of those—about 20,000—have received second notices, and around 10 French Internet users have received their third "strike" and are now facing possible penalties.
