Iwata: Zelda Skyward Sword expected to launch after Ocarina of Time 3D

It seems that the hero of Hyrule will remain bound to Nintendo's forthcoming 3D handheld in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time before turning his sword skyward at some point after, the company's third quarter financial report indicates. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been in the process of being remade for Nintendo 3DS, and this Nintendo 3DS version is expected to hit the market earlier [than Skyward Sword]," Nintendo head Satoru Iwata states in the piece.

Though Skyward Sword apparently won't launch until sometime after OoT (which is expected sometime after June's E3, outside of Nintendo's "launch window"), the report also reveals that Miyamoto's team is currently "entering into the final completion stage" of the Wii title. That being the case, we'll expect a much more impressive demonstration of the game at Nintendo's E3 presser later this year.

Paypal accounts for World of Warcraft gold sellers now on notice

Blizzard recently took action to hit World of Warcraft gold sellers right where it hurts: Their wallets. Well, the online services they use to transfer intangible funds from other people's wallets to their wallets, but you know what we mean. The developer has successfully petitioned Paypal to issue notices to the major names in gold selling, warning them that if they didn't stop selling WoW's virtual currency for non-virtual currency, their accounts would be irreversibly suspended.

Paypal appears to accept Blizzard's argument that these sales represent an intellectual property violation -- though this area has proven nebulous in the past, as suggested by the WoW Glider lawsuit from last year. Regardless, we hope they find some success with this venture. We don't understand why people can't earn gold the honest way: By buying everything off of the auction house and selling it back for three times its original price.

Ars at Macworld: Dead iPad? $1,000 can bring your data back

DriveSavers, a company you call when your hard drive goes boom and you have no recent back up, announced during the 2011 Macworld Expo that it now offers data recovery services for Apple iPads. The company has already performed a successful data recovery for an unnamed "CEO of a large financial institution," and is now offering its services for individual users as well as corporate and government clients.

Working with the solid state flash storage in the iPad presents unique challenges, according to DriveSavers enterprise recovery engineer Chris Bross. Bross heads DriveSavers' SSD recovery operations, and he's intimately familiar with both the physical and logical problems that must be solved to produce a successful data recovery.

JohnJac's Favorite Posts Of The Weeks

Last week JohnJac totally dominated the favorite comments, so we figured we might as well let him do the favorite posts of the week this week.

I really, really, wanted this post to be funny and?optimistic.?However as I read Techdirt, it became clear this week had a theme: governments over-reacting to?technology. ?This point was driven home when Egypt shut their people off from the Internet: I've?snickered in the past at other governments'?attempts to block skype or to block all of YouTube over a single video. ?If you had asked me last week, would a government go so far as to shut all internet access down, I would have told you no way.

While we're on the subject, check out this post over at Marginal Revolution, talking about how this move is likely to backfire for the?Egyptian government.

Other?governments are not?immune?from over-reaction, but thankfully not to the extent Egypt has gone. I love to hear some comments below on how 'we the people' can help our governments understand and not fear technology. ?Half my?professional career was spent working for a state government in a?technical roll, and I'm still at a loss as to how this can change.

But all hope isn't lost: On the lighter side, there is hope that people are using all the tools?available to them to create something new. ?The standout story here is?Pomplamoose. ?I just love what they are doing. My?Favorite?Comment of the week goes to John B. ?On Mike's story about Lee Harvey Oswald's coffin,?John B. said this: ?"This post isn't about tech, but it's about dirt, so there's that."

Many thanks to Mike and the Techdirt?Community for letting me share my thoughts.

Japanese hardware sales, Jan. 17 - Jan. 23: Groundhog Day Safety edition

As you may know, the annual observance of large, ridiculously named rat-based meteorology is almost upon us. As you may not know, there are a number of major hazards associated with the holiday that you can start preparing for now, tonight, right now. For instance, did you know that one out of every ten people actually do get stuck in a 24-hour time loop every Groundhog Day? It's true. It's absolutely true. We wouldn't lie to you, because lying is not our purview. Safety is our purview.

You can't do anything to avoid getting stuck in one of these nightmare scenarios -- you can only hope to ride out the 40 - 60-year span where time loops on itself, cyclically, driving you to redemption or madness. But you can set yourself up for a pleasant day: For instance, why not be really nice to everyone the day before Groundhog Day, so that they're really nice to you in return during your oft-repeated holiday? Also, buy a whole lot of candy the night before. That way, when you wake up every morning -- hey! The candy's back!

Verizon will sell 25 million iPhones in 2011

Verizon will sell 25 million iPhones in 2011William Power of R.W. Baird & Co has noted today that Verizon could sell as many as 25 million iPhones in 2011, basing the figure off a 1000-person survey.

The analyst believes a large number of Verizon feature phone users will upgrade to their first smartphone when the iPhone 4 hits.

Power was quick to add, however, that many factors could affect that number, including manufacturing capacity.

The latest analysis is the highest figure yet, ahead of Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster's 15 million estimate and Gleacher and Co.s Brian Marshall's 12 million estimate.

Munster, in his analysis, added the following:

Android phones outsell iPhones in the U.S., but we believe when Verizon gets the iPhone, that trend could be reversed. As an example, in countries where the iPhone is available on multiple carriers and competes with Android, we see the iPhone outselling Android.

Week in gaming: graphic adventures, new Sony portable, Dead Space 2

This week our number one story was a look back at the world of graphical adventures, but the most buzz belonged to Sony's new handheld. Codenamed "NGP," it's filled with every bit of technology you can imagine. Although Sony didn't mention a price, we're going to bet it will be more expensive than Nintendo's $250 3DS.

We also discussed Magicka's disappointing launch, reviewed the wonderfully scary Dead Space 2, and followed Sony's legal woes and victories with the PlayStation 3. These are the stories that had people talking this week, so dig in!
