LAS VEGAS -- PC maker Asus came out swinging against the iPad Tuesday, showing four new tablets at a news conference previewing the Consumer Electronics Show. The Taiwanese company showed four tablet computers, running Windows 7 and Android and boasting up to 16 hours of battery life.
The one tablet that runs Windows 7 will cost $999 to $1,099 and come out in January.
Three tablets will run the Android operating system from Google, cost $399 to $799 and start selling between April and June.
Three devices run on the Android operating system, including one that uses the new Honeycomb version of Android.
Here are the details on the four devices.
Eee Slate, $999 to $1,099, available in January. "It's a PC but not really a PC," said Jonney Shih, chairman of Asus. "No compromise, the most powerful tablet in the world." The tablet runs Windows 7 Home premium, has 65 gigabytes of solid state memory, 1080p high-def video, Intel Core processor, and up to 16 hours of battery life. It supports Flash and has a Bluetooth wireless keyboard that works with it. It can recognize handwriting with a stylus. While it supports multitouch, it was interesting that Asus only used the stylus during the on-sage demo of this device. In the demo, the company showed a high-def video running in the background while editing a photo in Photoshop.
Eee Pad Memo, $499 to $699, available in June. This slate runs on the Android operating system, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It can show 1080p video. It comes with a separate mic and phone extender about the size of an iPod shuffle.
Eee Pad Transformer, $399 to $699, available in April. The Transformer runs Android, has a capacitive 1280 by 800 touchscreen with an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. It docks to a keyboard, and, at 12.98 millimeters, is thinner than the iPad. It also has dual cameras to support video chatting, and battery life up to 16 hours, the company said.
Eee Pad Slider, $499 to $799, available in June. The tablet has a touch screen that slides up at an angle to reveal a keyboard, similar to the Backflip mobile phone. With the keyboard and screen folded down, the tablet is 0.66 of an inch thick and a few ounces short of 2 pounds. It has an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and runs on the Android Honeycomb operating system. it has a 10-inch multitouch display and dual cameras.
