Evidence continues to build that the next-generation iPad, expected to come out this spring, won't come with a "retina" class display after all. The staff at 9 to 5 Mac claims to have gotten its hands on one of the displays slated for the iPad 2 "fresh out of China" from iPhone repair shop iFixYouri. Though 9 to 5 Mac says it doesn't know for sure about the resolution, others have pegged the display as the same resolution as the first-generation iPad.
"At this point, we cannot tell if the resolution is higher (or 'Retina') but it is definitely higher quality in terms of its build," wrote 9 to 5 Mac. "The iPad 2's display is also lighter, and over a mm thinner than the current iPad’s display with a smaller surrounding frame."
The site posted a number of photos of the part in question (check them out if you want to see the gory details). This led Cult of Mac to identify the part number (LP097X02-SLN1) as an LG Phillips 9.7-inch XGA display, which is H-IPS and has a resolution of 1024x768. If it is indeed slated for the iPad 2, then the resolution will end up being the same as the current-generation iPad and not a Retina display. (Cult of Mac also notes that the LG Phillips display would indeed be about 1mm thinner and with a smaller bezel than the current iPad display.)
It's hard to say whether or not the allegedly leaked part is truly meant for the iPad 2—we're inclined to be skeptical, though it does match up with Apple's preference of eliminating space between the glass, digitizer, and actual LCD. Still, the "leak" does help bolster the growing belief that a retina-class display won't be coming to the iPad this year. A number of sources of varying reliability have said that the iPad slated for release in 2011 will have the same resolution as the current iPad, contrary to previous rumors about the device.
