Sonic Joins Mario for the London Olympics on Wii, 3DS

Mario and Sonic London

A new Sonic game was curiously absent from the Wii when Sega recently unveiled Sonic Generations. The newly-announced Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games won't exactly fill that hole, though it will mark Sonic's reappearance on the Wii and his debut on the 3DS.

On 3DS the game will feature more than 50 unspecified Olympic events and multiplayer support. No further details about that version were announced (with the exception of the obligatory 3D support). Sega said the Wii version will be getting new events like soccer and equestrian and so-called Dream events that take place inside "popular Mario and Sonic worlds."

The press release noted that the Mario & Sonic series has sold more than 19 million units worldwide. Following the original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Nintendo and Sega released a follow-up, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, in 2009. Both games were available on the Wii and DS. For whatever reason, only the Wii and 3DS will be getting the new London game.
