Atlus and Sting Unveil Gungnir

Sting, the Tokyo-based developers of hardcore strategy RPGs like Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare (DS version pictured above), is back with a brand-new title. The new issue of Japan's Famitsu magazine brings first word this week on Gungnir, a PSP-exclusive RPG and the first original (non-port) title from the developer since Knights in late 2008.

Gungnir is the name of the spear that the story apparently revolves around, a fabled weapon that's supposedly infused with the spirit of the god of war. It falls into the possession of an impoverished young man named Julio, which is fortuitous because he's currently involved in a resistance movement against the rich nobles running roughshod over the empire he calls home. With the help of his friends -- including Alissa, a mysterious girl that Julio saves from being sold into slavery early on in the game -- he'll likely use this spear to guide the teeming masses to freedom, or something similar.

Gameplay details for Gungnir are still a bit scant, outside of the fact that it's a Sting-style simulation RPG. Notable so far are two "tactics gauges" on both sides of the PSP screen, which you'll apparently use to carry out assorted actions in realtime on the battlefield.
